This project was inspired by our kitchen renovation we did recently, check the result out here. We also created this cute piece of art to make it look complete!
So I decided to get a little creative and whip myself up some new art. Now I say new, but it really isn’t new as this piece has been in our front bathroom. I decided to give it a face lift and make it work for our kitchen.
On the left you can see what it was originally. We were using it as our art/towel rack for our guest bathroom. As much as it looked good, it had lived out it’s purpose and needed a new home. So I got to work removing hardware and taking out the photos and inserts. I then proceed to use a little putty to fill the holes and sanded those down. Now, you can pretty much make a chalkboard out of ANYTHING paintable. Old breakfast tray? Picture frame? Anything like that will do for this project.
I then took the pieces I had left outside to be painted. I used the wood backers that were holding the pictures and painted those with chalkboard paint. I then gave the frame 2 fresh coats of gloss white spray paint and let them dry outside overnight. By the time I woke up and reassembled everything, I was SO pleased with how it all turned out.
It now sits perfectly in our updated kitchen, right above the stove. Not only does it fill the space in nicely, it gives us the opportunity to write down the menu for the night or little love notes to brighten the day. Next time you find yourself with an extra frame or tray, try something new! You never know what you might end up creating…
